Notion's integration story is complicated, and after five-plus years running it for a small ops team, I can say that with some authority. The native connections to Slack and Google Drive work fine for basic stuff. Push a database update, ping a channel, sync a doc. But the moment you need anything beyond the surface level, you're looking at Zapier workarounds or hoping someone built the right third-party connector. For a team our size, that adds up in both time and subscription costs. It should not be this patchy in 2024.
The workspace itself is genuinely flexible, and the database views have saved my team real headaches when tracking cross-functional work. I'm not walking away from Notion. But if integrations are a core part of how your team operates, go in with clear eyes. Their API has improved, and I appreciate that they're building toward something better. It's just not quite there yet, and five years of waiting has taught me to manage my expectations.
