Building and maintaining a design system at scale is where Figma proves its real value. Variables, modes, and proper component architecture have replaced what used to be a sprawling Sketch library and a separate token pipeline. We now ship dark mode, density variants, and accessibility variations through a single source of truth. The library publishing model has matured significantly. Plugin ecosystem is a major differentiator: we use Tokens Studio, Figma to Code, and a custom audit plugin we built in-house. Variable modes let us prototype themed experiences without forking files. The learning curve for variables is non-trivial and onboarding new designers takes time. Performance on our largest design system file is occasionally rough.
