Two years in, and my relationship with BambooHR's reporting features is best described as complicated. The dashboards look polished at first glance. Headcount trends, time-off summaries, turnover snapshots, they're all sitting right there on the home screen, and for a small team like mine (seven people), that visibility felt genuinely exciting when I started. Clicking into a pre-built report is fast. The interface doesn't punish you for being an HR team of one.
But the moment I try to build something custom, things get frustrating in a hurry. Filtering logic is limited. I can't always cross-reference the fields I actually need, like combining tenure data with performance ratings in a single exportable view. I've resorted to pulling two separate reports and stitching them together in a spreadsheet, which feels backwards for a platform that markets itself on simplifying HR work. Customer support has been polite when I've raised this, but the answers usually amount to 'that feature is on the roadmap,' and two years later I'm still waiting. Their service reps are kind. Not always useful.
The value question is a tough one at our size. For payroll, onboarding paperwork, and basic people data, BambooHR earns its keep. The analytics side, though, genuinely underserves anyone who wants more than surface-level insight. If you're a solo HR person at a tiny company and you just need clean records with pretty charts, it'll probably do the job. If you want to actually dig into your workforce data, brace for the spreadsheet workaround. I haven't given up on it, but I'm watching the roadmap closely.
