The platform we left had been with us for years, and I was the one lobbying hardest for the migration. That's a stressful position to be in. Five-plus years later, I can say I made the right call, but it wasn't a frictionless transition and it's worth being honest about what changed for better and worse.
On the better side, almost everything. Storefront customization is genuinely flexible at scale. Our merchandising team stopped filing tickets just to rearrange homepage content, which alone justified the switch. The order management workflow is cleaner, multi-location inventory is actually usable (our previous platform treated it like a bolt-on afterthought), and the app ecosystem filled every gap we had in roughly two months of onboarding. Support during the enterprise rollout phase was attentive. I had a dedicated contact who knew our account, not a queue.
The gripe that's stuck around: Shopify Plus pricing at enterprise scale adds up fast once you start layering in the apps you genuinely need to run a complex operation. Some features I expected to be native cost extra through third-party integrations, and a few of those integrations have their own reliability quirks. It's not a dealbreaker, and the core platform is solid enough that I'd still point anyone in this direction, but budget planning conversations get complicated. If you're coming from a platform where everything was bundled (even if clunkily), expect to rebuild your cost model from scratch. Worth it, in my experience. Just go in clear-eyed.
