As a business owner and entrepreneur for 35 years I am definitely what you would call 'old school'. When it comes to marketing your business and getting noticed, my comfort level and experience has always been door knocking and telemarketing. These days to try and find a true salesman to 'cold-call' is nearly impossible while telemarketing and newspaper is all but dead. What do we have left? Direct-mail, bulk-mail, radio, TV and events which are trade-specific are all effective to a degree but have limitations such as cost, audience-targeting and no long-term effect. And then there is the person at the other-end-of-the-phone, usually from some 'far-east' country telling me, "don't hang-up, your company is not getting noticed on the internet...you need to be on the FRONT PAGE OF GOOGLE". What gibberish! If I was paid minimum wage for the time spent listening to all the solicitations I have received from these so-called, Google-Gurus, not to mention designers of websites, social-media...
