Pros: The direct integration and daily refresh from our accounting system into idu-Concept allows non Finance managers and staff to proactively monitor and manage their areas of responsibility on an ongoing basis, reviewing results against budget without having to wait until manual excel based reports are run by Finance or month end reports are sent out.

Cons: The excel reports do need more tailoring to ensure they are set up to provide the information we need in the format we need

Overall: Using idu-Concept in our last annual budget setting process allowed the process to be more efficient. With staff able to concurrently access their project areas and add comments or make changes as needed, a reduced timeframe was needed for the process and as well as being less stressful for all!

What do you like best?


Analytics - Reporting. The support received from the Auckland team and SA team is very good.

Yearly meet up gives us an product update and a forum to meet other users.

What do you dislike?


Reporting Licence restriction. Idu Analytics reporting feature is restricted by IDU users. Cost associated to Reporting Licence can restrict small and NFP organizations from using the analytics?

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?


We are in the process of testing out IDU Business intelligence.

Showcasing Idu Analytics on O365 SP online. This would help with reaching out to wider audience.

With all staff able to concurrently access individual project areas within idu-Concept and either review results, set budgets or make changes our 'budget setting season' is less stressful for all and reduces the time needed for the process. The ability to assign access to specific areas of the budget to specific staff means we can have staff at all levels taking accountability for their areas.
Using idu-Concept has streamlined our overall budgeting process, and allows non-finance staff to access their areas, interrogate costs and understand how they are tracking against budget without having to request reports from Finance or wait for excel workbooks to be updated.
idu-Concept allows real-time, up to date analysis against budget enabling all divisional managers to track their progress and thus reduces month end reporting processes as managers are able to review their results at anytime in the month.

"Implementation of budget reporting integrating with Sage 300 PJC"

What do you like best?

The software has interfaced directly to our job costing software and has provided access to our staff who have now taken ownership of their budgets. The ability to drill down to the financial entries has given a visibility to the actual versus budget results that has been well received by staff at all levels.

What do you dislike?

The administration side is quite complex.The system has such flexibility that it takes some mastering of all the different areas requiring set up.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The monthly Board reporting now can involve all areas of the business simultaneously and has reduced the amount of time required to complete the review of the financials.

The annual budget process has input from all levels of management and therefore has greater commitment to the budget from the staff.

"Great reporting functions"

Various type of reports available for whatever the need. It is easy to compare, view and analyse figures.
I like the easy import function.

I cannot (and don't want to) imagine life of budgeting/forecasting/reporting without IDU.

Actual figures, reports, budgets, etc are always accessible for users, they do not have to rely on accountant to send it ongoing.

"Powerful Excel Reports"


What do you like best?


The Excel reports are customisable to suite entity requirements. The reports that required several downloading then formatting/ merging in excel, now can run on a single go.

What do you dislike?


The reports can only run for users according to their access rights and does not show the user the access rights at the time of running the report, therefore at first go one may assume that the report is all inclusive.

If you have any ERP/ accounting system and do need to analyse data and customize reports, IDU is a great system for that.

"Great Budgeting Software"

What do you like best?

The fact that its excel based makes it easy to use. The user flexibility and customization makes IDU perfect for reporting.

What do you dislike?

Still trying to figure out how the CAPEX tracking can work best for our organisation (reporting especially). If IDU can have the ability to assist in CAPEX spend tracking it will be superb.

Recommendations to others considering the product

The best budgeting module there is in the industry. Without a doubt.

"Easy to use and monitor"


What do you like best?


The ease with which I can see the high level results but then have the ability to drill down to a GL level. Ability to allow users within the business to drill down into their actual expenses to keep track of spending

What do you dislike?


I can't think of anything material other than users get frustrated at times with clicking through various levels of detail that they don't truly understand, which is required from my side.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?


Reduces the turnaround time for the budget as well as assist with the ongoing monitoring of the budget. Users are also able to keep tabs on their own departments in detail without having to use up the finance departments time in responding to queries.

IDU has made reporting, budgeting & forecasting an administrative dream for my department. I would highly recommend IDU for any business, big or small.

Pros: Easy to use for non-financial users. Ability to adapt and customize system to suit our business on a continuous basis. Easy to understand system & use it in our day to day business for reporting & decision making. Admin ability to create, change or update anything, without depending on IDU consultants. Feedback & assistance from Helpdesk & Consultants are always fast & effective!

Cons: That I cannot see 'back-end' rules to make sure it is in line with my expectations. IDU is very fiscal set restricted (causing duplication of work & errors to occur). Structures is also very specific, again duplication of work (would be nice to have a 'main' set up where all structures feed from).

Started using the system in 2014. It is a user friendly system with amazing functionalities. It has really made our work processes more efficient. The support/helpdesk is very efficient as Users' needs/queries are addressed as soon as possible.
Pros: The analytical reporting and the Recodes and Accruals are excellent functionalities available on idu Version 5. The idu-Concept Administrator is very user friendly which makes it easier for any person to manage the admin environment, no IT/system developing skills required hence no support agreement is needed.
Cons: No cons that I can think of, the system offers functionalities that meet the needs of businesses. It is responsive to business needs especially the latest Version 5 has made a significant move in addressing business needs. The system provides value for money and its implementation cost is reasonable.
Recommendations to other buyers: It is worth finding out more about this software and am sure you will end up implementing it

I have been working on the IDU programme/software for the last four years and i am impressed with the programme and all the functions that are offered. We mainly use it for our budgeting process and i am quite happy with how everything is structured. We recently upgraded to the latest version of IDU and there are some features that are no longer available and most people struggled to find their way on how to go about using the programme but the overall experience has been awesome and the wonderful team at IDU KZN has been very helpful.

Pros: The reports, i think they a have been designed in such a way that they even if a person has never worked on the IDU programme, one can easily interpret the information.

Cons: We always have to email our queries and not communicate our queries over the phone. I think IDU should introduce team viewer to be able to see on our screens what issues we have.

Pros:The budget&forecast application is user friendly and supports driving responsibility for managing budgets to the budget owners,and assists the Finance team to effectively monitor budgets and forecast accurately.IDU has a great culture-the team have the right skill sets & knowledge/experience,understand the budget process(not just good application developers!),and fully support you from day one through to successful implementation and beyond.This is the experience a customer wants with a product and the service!
Cons:There is nothing to complain about-really!Whilst one can always improve on a product and service,I always get the impression that IDU are already one step ahead planning for the next improvements to their product when as a user you suggest an improvement.

Pros: Proudly South African, developed with our unique requirements and collective character in mind. Keeping up with the latest technological as well as other related developments at all times, responding positively to the requirements of individual clients as well as clients within a specific industry (in our case, the Higher Education (HE) sector). Finally, a helpdesk as well as other technical and client support services operating at the speed of light.

Cons: Nothing, really! I can simply not think up anything!

Recommendations to other buyers: Taking into consideration of, as well as knowing exactly what you want at the end, as well as response times expected and delivered upon. Also, needs arising from the specific industry in which you find yourself and the resulting power of "collective bargaining" as an industry and the response of the service provider thereto, as opposed to bargaining power as an individual client.

Pros: It enhances the integrity of financial information by eliminating manual intervention

Overall: Definitely improved our integrity as the finance department.

Pros: Really is not easy to find budgeting and expense application which provides good quality tools like idu-Concept. It's being used for forecasting and budgeting purposes by our organization for 1 and half year. And it was one of the must application in any companies.

For years the budgets were done on an Excel Spreadsheet. With 3 Companies, multiple divisions and about 9 branches, it was a constant nightmare to keep everything in sync. Spreadsheet were send to branch managers to modify. These spreadsheets were then sent back for finance to incorporate it into the main spreadsheet, Sometimes there were multiple versions of the spreadsheets and just maintaining the Main spreadsheet was a challenge. Using IDU now allows all users to work on the budgeting software at the same time. Costs that cannot be broken down into IDU are done on a spreadsheet and referred to from within IDU. The time it now takes to complete the budgets has drastically reduced. Comparisons to live data as well as the past year makes complete sense when users are trying to complete their budgets.

Pros: Takes the responsibility of costing away from the budget office and makes the cost centres take accountability for their budget. The budget process is reduced as there is no longer a need to utilise spreadsheets. What is also appreciated is that requests for customisation are always accomodated



Cons: No cons, complaints from users relates to mon ability to copy and paste information that was captured incorrectly.



Overall: The IDU system has addressed the major issue of accountability and ownership of the budget by managers in the organisation. It has also forced managers to take the process seriously as the budget team has better tools to analyse all submission.

Comments: The system is not very user friendly when working with many cost centers and an expense account across all needs to be reviewed. The changing and creating of reports also needs to be simplified. On certain functions, the number of import files required is very time consuming.

Pros: The structure of the system is good and the multi-user function allows overall teamwork. The different account types contribute to overall control and accuracy of input.

Cons: The percentage allocation option can become very complicated with the levels of calculations required. The balance sheet and cash flow options have served no purpose due to setup and training.

Pros: The user interface is easily understandable and requires minimal training of staff to understand. This does however assume the staff has basic computer skills.

Cons: The administration of the product is a bit cumbersome and the vast number of settings available is a bit daunting at times.

Recommendations to other buyers: If the focus of your budgets is for collation and accountability at HOD level then it is an excellent product. If you looking for more advanced features which is standard in some budgeting tools then this one is not for you. The other huge benefit is the price and that it is a locally developed product which means support at all levels including development is a local phone call away.

The IDU team have the right skill sets & knowledge / experience, understand the budget process, and, full and speedy support is available from day one of the implementation process.

Cons: The e-mail functionality currently does not support a hosted shared environment requiring user ID and password, as it uses a generic name: anonymous. IDU are currently looking into the situation.

Pros: The client module. It is really straightforward and user friendly



Cons: The admin module and permission settings



Overall: We needed a budgeting and reporting tool to take away all the manual creation of spreadsheets. The client module is great and so easy to use. The admin module has proved challenging in terms of understanding the reporting structures, correctly setting permissions as it seems one tick box in one place doesn't over ride another in a different section. Getting buy in from the team to actually use the system is the most challenging part of it all.

Comments: IDU Budget Concept is a tool that helped us be able to view actuals from our Sage ERP against Budget. The tool has good segregation of data such that you only view the cost centre you are entitled to. It is a great product. It however,just like other software solutions, requires to be introduced carefully in an organisation with good training and refresher training for high acceptance of the software by many users in an organisation.

Pros: The Software is ease to use and has an appealing User Interface.

Cons: - Custom reports are not so easy to design - You always have to rely on the Consultants

Comments: Idu-Concept provides smart budgeting, forecasting, and reporting tools with easy-to-use modules which can be modified as per the business type it is being used in. It is an easy to use software which does not require too many hours of training and can be used by personnel with or without any background knowledge of accounting.

Pros: The software can be used on windows as well as mac devices. Transparency between departments which reduces confusion by reducing redundant data and errors in spreadsheets. Easy to use interface and to generate reports as well.

Cons: Idu can be used on-premise only as of now. I think Idu should work on designing the software to work on mobile devices as well.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would suggest medium to large businesses to use this software. It is a cost effective software which does budgeting and forecasting efficiently.

Cons: Experienced difficulty with entering historic information and opening balances.

What do you like best?

All companies have different needs and requirements when it comes to budgeting. IDU is the complete budgeting system which no company can do without. Budgeting use to be a nightmare especially consolidating the all divisions and branches.

What do you dislike?


There is not much to dislike however if we could make a suggestion to improve it would have been to increase the "excel functionality", however this is not a big issue as you are able to export into excel if needed.

Consolidation of budgets is the biggest benefit.

Decreased the budget process tremendously and should see an even bigger improvement as users get more comfortable with the system.

The flexibility of the system and the authority levels for users. I also like the analytics function.

I have no issues really. I would like there to be one login for the Budgeting and Reporting Module but this is cosmetic.

I would recommend it because our entity is very 'fussy' and this system is also working for non-financial employees with ease.

What do you like best?
IDU give you the ability to view your financial data in the most effective and simplistic way possible.This software can be used by everyone(including a non-financial user). No more sending out multiple excel files&checking budget excel files;now we have one source,which multiple users can work at the same time&information is trusted(up to the most detailed level).
What do you dislike?
Fiscal sets are very independent,although you can integrate&synchronize them, I would enjoy a central base where you make&update account information/structures once and it is copied everywhere.

Simple format of Financial reporting for the non-financial users to have information at the tip of their fingers. Ease of budgeting for non-financial users. What do you like best?


IDU is very easy to understand and user-friendly especially for non-finance people. Ever since I started using IDU in 2014 Budget iterations and version controls are more efficient as compared to Excel spreadsheets.

What do you dislike?


It would be great if one can be able to select multi Cost Centres or different Cost Centre codes at the same time, perhaps an analytics functionality can solve this problem.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?


Managers are making more informed decisions as they have real time access to the financial information of their respective functions. This has resulted in reduced Planning and Operational Inefficiency Variances.

Budgeting - we are a big multi company user and we are able to budget by person for - 27000 people. Consolidating and building budget structures is a breeze. able to fit into any CRM you may use with real time data all the time.

There is nothing that I dislike very easy to use user friendly system.

What do you like best?


One place, with one version of the truth, and all changes are immediately available in the relevant views.

What do you dislike?


The detail of the budget break out per line item does not export. Only totals are exported. Also doing different scenarios are challenging in IDU.

Budget process is far more efficient and we have given ownership and visibility back to the budget owners.

What do you like best?


Simple, efficient and short implementation required, on-site with client involved every step of the way. This also served as "training" and knowledge transfer on how the system operates and how it should be maintained. We find their helpdesk to be one of their biggest strengths, with efficient client specific assistance almost immediate. The possibility of multiple, different, structures, both for reporting and budget presentation is something to first grasp, but it is very powerful.

What do you dislike?


Not much to dislike, some newly added functionality that does not form part of the standard package could be a costly add-on.

Single platform for budget capture, submission and review, with instant consolidation of business units.

Multiple structures available for different reporting structures and views.

What do you like best?


Can slice and dice the general ledger in any way you wish to get the reporting format you need. The ability to drill down into any number shown.

What do you dislike?


It can be a bit overwhelming for new users in terms of all the options and the navigation around the package

What do you like best?


IDU is not only a great and easy to use budgeting application, but helps drive day to day ownership of business unit or departmental budgets, cost management, revenue growth and variance reporting by the business unit or department leaders. The team behind IDU, and lead by Kevin Philips, have lived and breathed preparing budgets and have an infinite understanding of what the user requires.

What do you dislike?


Nothing to dislike! Most great products tend to have poor service - not with IDU ... a great team who are customer centric!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?


Our budget, expense analysis, & variance reporting are supported by IDU's CPM. Benefits have been improved efficiency and improved accuracy in preparing budgets and monthly management account reporting. Furthermore, ownership of business unit budgets has been decentralised.

What do you like best?


The tool is easy to implement. It is easy to learn and understand. The staff are always friendly and helpful. It was a great buy for our Institution.

What do you dislike?


Some of the IDU standard reports are not very user friendly. There are a few standard functionalities that could be tweaked a bit.

Our Institution uses it for budgeting and adhoc reporting. It has simplied and streamlined our budgeting processes.

What do you like best?


The turnaround time on the annual budgeting process has been reduced with around 6 weeks since implemention. In addition, subsequent product developments and upgrades has reflected attention to customer needs. The response time on queries logged with the helpdesk is also commendable; if not resolved the same day/next day, issues are logged with subsequent solutions/improvements.

What do you dislike?


I cannot think of anything, will need to nitpick to find something.
